About

My Background

I am a current and 10 Time Amateur Duathlon World Champion and won over 100 triathlon / duathlon races outright. I have over 20 years of experience in endurance training, racing, coaching and mentoring. I am British but moved across the pond to California 10 years ago to work for Intel as a Supply Chain Engineer with my Norwegian wife and 2 children.

I have always loved playing and watching sports and was a competitive runner and keen racket sports player at school and University

Why Choose Me?

I have learned so much from over 20 years of training and racing encountering and overcoming countless obstacles as part of my journey to reaching the highest amateur level in the sport. I have lost races I shouldn’t, I have had to overcome innumerable injuries, navigate 2 decades of a debilitating illness (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), endured 2 heart ablation procedures for arrhythmias, had long periods being unable to train due to work / family demands, but ultimately was always drawn back to the sport I loved, and fortunately each time returned to racing at a high level. This requires grit and determination but also dissecting the reasons for the setbacks and implementing corrective strategies to overcome them. I am naturally analytical and curious and perhaps a little obsessed with the pursuit of excellence studying the latest science and how the best amateurs and professionals’ train. I have also learned so much from being coached by some of the best triathlon coaches in the sport including Dave Scott (6 x Ironman World champ), Joe Beer (top UK triathlon coach with 3 decades of experience) and Bob Tobin (coach of many pro level triathletes and cyclists). I love to coach and help athletes regardless of their level providing they have the desire to learn and improve.

Training Philosophy

“Train smarter but not necessarily harder”

For most people including myself time is a precious commodity. I have to juggle work, family, training/racing and coaching clients. This leaves little to no room for ineffective training. My training sessions must have an intended goal and I must see long term results. This rule applies equally to those whom I coach. My personal experience, as well as from those athletes I coach, is that “more training is not always better”. Everyone has a “sweetspot” of training volume which is determined by many factors including sleep, recovery, nutrition, length of time in the sport, genetics, injury and illness susceptibility, training intensity distribution, race goals, motivation etc.

I will put you, the athlete, first and we will collaborate together to help reach your triathlon goals. Whilst I am keen to adopt some established and proven training approaches, such as polarized / pyramidal training intensity distribution models, there is never one size fits all and we must work together to find out exactly what works for you.
